Does Fort Hunter have a connection to the popular movie “Lincoln”?

In light of Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” a recent post on the Civil War Blog of the Gratz Historical Society has called attention to Pennsylvania Democrats who voted in favor of the 13th Amendment that abolished slavery.

One of the two Democratic congressmen, Archibald McAllister, was born at Fort Hunter in 1813, and was the grandson of the builder of the Fort Hunter Mansion. As a child he undoubtedly experienced slavery first hand, as the McAllisters were among the last slaveholding families in the state. His vote to ensure the elimination of slavery in the United States was thus a break with other factions of his party as well as his own family’s past.
