    Ikebana and Bonsai Exhibits

    Time:
    1:00 PM - 5:00 PM
    Location:
    Centennial Barn

Celebrate two forms of Japanese artistry at Fort Hunter this weekend.  The Harrisburg Chapter of Ikebana International will hold their annual Ikebana exhibition for two days in Fort Hunter’s Centennial Barn and the Susquehanna Bonsai Club will exhibit several specimens of bonsai in the 1810 Stable. The shows will be open Saturday from 1 – 5 pm and Sunday, during Garden Faire, from 10 am – 4 pm. Admission is free.

Ikebana is a disciplined art form in which nature and humanity are brought together. Ikebana often emphasizes areas other than the flower of the plant, such as its stems and leaves, and draws emphasis toward shape, line and form through minimalism.   Bonsai is an art form of miniature trees grown in containers.  The purpose of bonsai is primarily contemplation (for the viewer) and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity (for the grower.)

Members of Ikebana will present flower arrangements in the different styles of Ikebana and will be judged on the arrangements adherence to style specifications.  A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 11 am on Saturday.

Ikebana International is a non-profit cultural organization dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement.   Ikebana International does not teach any singe style of Ikebana; rather, it encompasses many different schools.  The Harrisburg chapter of Ikebana International has been in existence for 56 years.

The Susquehanna Bonsai Club, started in 1980, will be displaying their trees and will be on hand to answer any questions about the art of bonsai. They will also be demonstrating the techniques used to create these living works of art throughout the weekend. Members will also be available on Saturday to give advice on bonsai trees that are brought in by visitors.

Slavery and the Underground Railroad with Cooper Wingert

    Time:
    7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
    Location:
    Centennial Barn

Historian Cooper Wingert reveals the struggles between slavery and abolition in South Central Pennsylvania in a talk focusing on his recent book “Slavery & the Underground Railroad in Central Pennsylvania.”

Much like the rest of the nation, South Central Pennsylvania struggled with slavery. The institution lingered locally for more than fifty years, although it was virtually extinct everywhere else within Pennsylvania. Gradually, antislavery views prevailed. The Appalachian Mountains and the Susquehanna River provided natural cover for fleeing slaves, causing an influx of travel along the Underground Railroad. Locals like William Wright and James McAllister assisted these runaways while publicly advocating to abolish slavery.

Signed copies of his book will be available for purchase.  The illustrated talk is free.
