One of the two Democratic congressmen, Archibald McAllister, was born at Fort Hunter in 1813, and was the grandson of the builder of the Fort Hunter Mansion. As a child he undoubtedly experienced slavery first hand, as the McAllisters were among the last slaveholding families in the state. His vote to ensure the elimination of slavery in the United States was thus a break with other factions of his party as well as his own family’s past.
