April 15, 1912 Monday – Horrible shipwreck.  The “Titanic” new steamer of White Star Line ran into iceburg on maiden trip & was sunk.  Annual meeting of Civic Club.  I was elected President.

April 16, 1912 Tuesday – People talk of nothing but shipwreck.  Not much news yet.  Meeting of Y.W.C.A. in morning.  Warm day.  Came home at noon utterly tired out.

April 19 1912 Friday – The “Carpathia” landed last evening with “Titanic” survivors 705.  1654 people lost.  Eleven prominent Philadelphians.  Elected president of Y.W.C.A.

April 21 1912 Sunday – Went to town as usual.  Will Bailey died here.  He & J.W.R. walked over the Dauphin Mountains.  George Widener & son lost on “Titanic.”

Helleborus orientalis, commonly known as Lenten Rose,  is popping up among last year’s leaf cover to share creamy white and pretty magenta blooms. And what is that sweet , pleasant fragrance around the Mansion house?  The winter honeysuckle announces its presence to the nose before the eyes are close enough to see it.

Delicate, creamy white blossoms with the hint of pink  adorn a scragly shrub.  These beautiful little flowers are small but mighty; they are worth the trip to walk around the Mansion, view the river and enjoy the glorious smell.

It explains how and why the archaeologists are conducting this investigation at the site of an important French and Indian War fortification.  The exhibit text follows the methods employed to identify the site, the actual excavations and then the analysis which is conducted after the artifacts return to the lab.  Visit http://www.statemuseumpa.org/ for more information.
