Virtual Illustrated Talk: A Discussion of the French and Indian War in America, Pennsylvania, and in the Lives of Soldiers

    Time:
    7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
    Location:

The Friends of Fort Hunter Lecture Series virtually presents Lynn Otto and Don Cramer offering a reflection on the origins, events, and impact of the French and Indian War, as well as a discussion of the uniforms, weapons, and life of a soldier in this conflict.  England and France have a long history of military conflict in their respective quests for global influence. In the middle of the 18th century, their rivalry spilled into North America in a conflict that is known as the Seven Year’s war, or French and Indian War. Fort Hunter was part of a line of defense and a supply depot at this time.

Lynn Otto has been involved in reenacting and Living History since 1984. He is currently the commander of the 1st and 3rd Battalions of the Pennsylvania Regiment, a Pennsylvania Provincial reenactment group of the French and Indian War and sister group to Regiment De La Reine. His interest is focused on the 1730 to 1760 time period of the 18th century in Pennsylvania.

Don Cramer has been a living history reenactor for over 35 years. Much of his focus has been on the period around the French and Indian War, and he currently serves as the unit commander of the Regiment de La Reine, a reenacting club headquartered in Southeast Pennsylvania.

The virtual lecture is free but registration is required.  A link to view the presentation will be emailed in the week prior to the talk.  Click here to register.

Virtual Illustrated Talk: Harrisburg Homefront in WWII with Rodney Ross

    Time:
    7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
    Location:

Join the Friends of Fort Hunter in a virtual illustrated talk with author Rodney Ross as he reveals the trials of life on the homefront in Harrisburg during World War II.

Municipal offices, churches, schools, clubs, hotels, and industries side by side with the USOs, the YMCA and the YWCA, did their part. Citizens enlisted for bond, Red Cross, scrap, foreign aid, and blood drives. Hollywood sent stars for promotions.  Federal programs required teamwork. For the most part, local officials cooperated with conscription, internal security, civil defense, rationing, and public health.    The Harrisburg military district harbored military bases and war industries, drawing service personnel and migrant labor. The influx aggravated housing, traffic, crime, and vice. Authorities had their hands full.  Wartime challenged the status quo.

Rodney J. Ross is a Harrisburg native. He attended Forney Elementary, Edison Junior High School, and John Harris High. He is a 1962 Shippensburg State Teachers graduate. He earned a master’s and a doctorate at the Pennsylvania State University. Before retiring in 2017, he taught seven years in the Harrisburg School District and forty-seven at the Harrisburg Community College. He has authored academic articles, book reviews, and encyclopedia entries.

The lecture is free but you must register to participate.  An email will be sent during the week prior to the lecture with instructions on how to join the virtual lecture.  Click here to register.
