SUMMARY:Virtual Illustrated Lecture: Hair through Time
DESCRIPTION:In this virtual lecture we will learn about the many steps it takes to go from the idea for a museum display\, through the research phase\, and ending with the final product when it comes to the world of hair. Our speaker\, Ashley Leitzel-Reichenbach\, IATSE Hairstylist from NYC\, has shared her talents in several exhibits at the Fort Hunter mansion. Her presentation will focus on historical styling techniques and how these can be achieved with modern day tools and products. Come along with us as we bring hairstyles of the past to life for visitors to enjoy today. \nYou can see Ashley’s work up close and in person in this year’s exhibit\, “Life with the Reilys” as she has generously loaned her wigs and stylings to enhance the mannequins in the exhibit room for the second year in a row. \nTo receive the link to attend the lecture\, please register for this free virtual program using the link below. A meeting link will be provided to you via email prior to the lecture. \nRegister Here: https://friends-of-fort-hunter.ticketleap.com/virtual-illustrated-lecture-ashley-leitzel-/

SUMMARY:Virtual illustrated Talk: Built on a Bluff: Investigating the Geology of PA’s Riverbanks around Fort Hunter
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder what exactly a “bluff” is? Why was Fort Hunter located where it was?  Join the Friends of Fort Hunter and Dr. Sean Cornell to explore the Fort Hunter/Susquehanna region to address some questions about how these features may have formed geologically and what they may indicate about changes in climate in PA during the recent geologic past. \nGeologists have been arguing about bluffs for decades and there are a number of hypotheses proposed about how\, why\, and when they formed. The Susquehanna River and its tributaries including the Juniata River\, not only have a number of active “bluffs” along their modern river courses\, but there are relict bluffs or terraces identifiable in the morphology of hillsides above them. In addition\, the types and textures of sediments that compose these bluffs often reveal important clues that indicate changes in river flows through time as well as climate. \nDr. Sean Cornell is professor in the Geography & Earth Science Department at Shippensburg University\, specializing in physical geology topics\, particularly sedimentary geology and geologic hazards\, among other related topics. \nThis illustrated talk is free but participants must register to receive the link by email\, to view the lecture. An email will be sent to you\, in the week prior to the lecture date\, with a link and sign in instructions to the live talk. Click here for your free ticket. \n

SUMMARY:The Gilded Age at Fort Hunter Fashion Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:All that glitters is not gold\, or is it? Extending from the 1870’s to 1900\, between the Civil War and the turn of the Twentieth Century\, the American Gilded Age was a time of rapid economic and industrial growth in the United States and a time of serious poverty and social problems as well. Glittering on the surface but corrupt underneath. \nThe current\, popular HBO series “The Gilded Age” focuses on the intrigue and drama of the upper-class families of New York City\, showing fabulous women’s attire of the time. Helen and John Reily lived at Fort Hunter Mansion during this time period\, from their marriage in 1886 until their deaths in the 1927 and 1932. Eleven dresses worn by Helen Reily during this time period will be on display for this exhibit. \nAn added feature of interest – a prominent figure in the HBO show is Ward McAllister\, played by Nathan Lane. Ward was a real-life person who was the arbiter of good taste in New York society\, advisor to Lady Astor. In real life\, Ward McAllister was a great\, great nephew of Fort Hunter’s builder\, Archibald McAllister. Fort Hunter’s claim to fame! \nExhibit mannequins are often featureless and without hair. Fort Hunter is fortunate to have real\, human hair wigs depicting the latest fashions in hairstyles of the late 1800’s high society on the mannequin heads. \nThanks to Ashley Leitzel-Reichenbach\, the Fort Hunter exhibit has professional wigs that truly reflect the hairstyles of the time and bring the exhibit to life. Ashley just finished the season as Head Hair Design for the TV show “Bull” and also currently works on the “The Gilded Age”. Fort Hunter is honored to have such television royalty contributing to the exhibit. Many thanks to Ashley for giving her time and tremendous talent to bring the Fort Hunter mannequins to life\, the hair really does make the exhibit.
