    Christmas at Fort Hunter

    Catch the holiday spirit as you enjoy a guided tour of Fort Hunter Mansion decorated with fresh greens and fruits, dried materials and fresh flowers.  Many thanks to the Civic Committee of the Garden Club of Harrisburg for their inspired decorating creations.  The lives of the families that lived at Fort Hunter are highlighted on guided tours of the elegant rooms. Tour size is limited to 8 people.  Reservations are encouraged, walk-in tours are accommodated as available. Masks and social distancing are encouraged.

    Many thanks to Nature’s Way Nursery for providing the pine roping and parlor Christmas tree used in holidays decorations.

    Visit the Virtual Museum Shop, place an order online and pick up at the Mansion.

    Annual Festival of Trees

    Co-sponsored by the Harrisburg Area Civic Garden Center, six themed Christmas trees are exhibited for viewing. Beautifully decorated with handmade ornaments and trimmed by local garden clubs the trees are available for raffle. A selection of handmade ornaments will be available for purchase. Masks and social distancing are encouraged.

    Fort Couture

    The creative holiday spirit has triumphed over a year of cancellations and postponements. Adorned in holiday spirit, these Christmas dress forms are a twist on holiday decoration.

    Displayed in the Stone Stable, these festive wonders are created by volunteers, Friends of Fort Hunter and local businesses. Using fresh and imitation greens and other imaginative materials, Fort Couture will amaze and inspire your holiday season.    Safely visit the stone stable in-person to see festive creativity at its best.  Visitors will enter and exit through opposite paths, social distancing and masks (festive perhaps?) are recommended.

    Toy Train Exhibit

    Centennial Barn

    Toy trains and Christmas are the stuff of memories. View passenger trains, freight trains and scenes reminiscent of Pennsylvania attractions and countryside at this annual event. Presented and operated by the Keystone Model Railroad Historical Society, a magical wonderland of HO gauge trains unfolds on an 18X24 layout that may be viewed from all sides.

    Check it out from every angle. There is something for everyone as lights flash, burning buildings glow, sirens sound, cattle moo and Ferris wheels turn. Old and new trains will be displayed each week and for the annual visitor, exciting new additions are made each year. Thanks to the Friends of Fort Hunter for underwriting this popular attraction.

    Virtual Kid's Only Holiday Shop

    Kids age 12 and under can shop online for family and friends. All gifts are under $10 with items for all ages, including grandparents and are tasteful and unique items from the Museum Shop at Fort Hunter. The gifts will be wrapped and tagged by helper elves.  Children may pickup their purchases at the Fort Hunter Museum Shop with smiles on their faces and secrets in their gift sacks.

    Don’t miss this special opportunity for parents and kids, orders may be placed any time.

    Victorian Tea - Hybrid Version

    Enjoy the Victorian Tea in a hybrid fashion! – tour the Mansion in-person and take your tea “to go.”

     

     

    Contactless entry –  tickets are by online pre-registration only.

    By timed entry, view the mansion adorned, by the Civic Committee of the Harrisburg Garden Club, for the holidays with fresh greens and natural trimmings. View a demonstration of making clear toy candy, an old-time favorite. Enjoy familiar holiday tunes by Mary Ann Guerrisi – violin and Becky Boone – flute.

    As you exit the Museum Shop, pick up your pre-purchased tea package “to go” and enjoy the tea treats in the comfort of your own home. “To Go” tea boxes will include a copy of Fort Hunter Mansion and Park Guide Book, a bag of the Fort Hunter spice tea mix, cookies, scones and jam.

    Masks and social distancing are encouraged.  Guided tours will not be offered today.

    $20 non-members,  $15 members

    Clear Toy Candy Demonstration

    A sweet reminder of the past; clear toy candy making will be demonstrated in the summer kitchen of the Mansion during the Victorian Tea. This Pennsylvania-German tradition that dates back to the 1700s involves molding sugar into a hard-candy sculptures. This candy was, and still is, a traditional holiday gift among local Pennsylvanians; one-part play-thing, and one-part edible treat. Candy makers George Kopp and Gina Napoli will demonstrate in the Mansion summer kitchen during the Victorian Tea and have candies for sale.  Free
