In Person Lecture – Fort Hunter African American Cemetery

November 19, 2025 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
FREE

The Friends of Fort Hunter Invite You to a Lecture on the Fort Hunter African American Cemetery, presented as part of their annual meeting!

Join Dr. Steven Burg, professor of history at Shippensburg University, at the Fort Hunter Park Centennial Barn on Wednesday, November 19, at 6:30 p.m. for an informative talk about the Fort Hunter African American Cemetery and its listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The free lecture will provide a look at the Craig family, whose members were enslaved and free African Americans living and working at Fort Hunter from the late 18th through the early 20th century, and the property where several family members are buried.

The burial ground, which was originally part of the Fort Hunter estate in Dauphin County, sits today amid a small clearing in woods owned by the Country Club of Harrisburg. On November 25, 2024, the National Park Service listed the Craig (Crage) Family Cemetery (also known as the Fort Hunter African American Cemetery) in Susquehanna Township on the National Register of Historic Places. Dr. Burg, who was instrumental in getting the historic designation for the site, says the cemetery provides a powerful place to reflect on the lives of the African American men and women who lived and worked at Fort Hunter.

The National Register nomination has sparked new interest in exploring this chapter of Fort Hunter history. The Popel Shaw Center at Dickinson College has been collaborating with the Country Club of Harrisburg to foster a network of educators, students, and community partners who are exploring creative ways to continue research on the site, ensure its long-term preservation, and share its story with the community. Come to the November 19 lecture to learn more about the remarkable Craig family and the burial ground where many members are interred.
